Objective: Learn the smoking status of male workers in Kunming city, and reveal the behavioral characteristics, quitting desire and impact factors of different smokers, so as to provide initial analysis for the follow-up interventions, to provide a scientific basis for developing a set of effective intervention measures on cigarette cessation. Methods: Adopt the purposive sampling in non-probability sampling approaches, apply the survey questionnaire co-designed by the university of California and Stanford in the United States which has been used repeatedly, we have modified it according to the China's nation conditions after translation and back-translation for the quantitative research. Results: (1). The starting smoking ages of the male smoking workers in Kunming are low, the average age of firstly trying to smoke a cigarette is 18.31 years old, and the percent of smokers who start smoking regularly before 20 years old is 37.6 %; the smoking history of the smokers is generally long, the average is 23.80 years old. (2). The extent of smoking is relatively heavy, moderate and severe smokers accounted for 72.9 percent of the total, the percent of the smokers who inhale the smoke to the lung is 90.7 percent. (3). The cigarette price and consumption on tobacco that the smokers spent increased with the rise of the family income. (4). Severe smokers pay more attention on the tar content than moderate and light smokers in sequence. (5). Majority of the smokers have a considerable dependence on nicotine, the smokers who smoke the first cigarette per day within half an hour after getting up account for 54.3 percent; and the smokers who smoke more cigarettes within the two hours after waking up every day than those smoked in the rest of the daytime account for 20.7 percent. (6). There are 57.9 percent smokers who have the quitting experience and now 36.2 percent smokers have the quitting desire. (7). The smokers who thought themselves suffering from tobacco-related diseases account for 78.1 percent, while the smokers who were so ill in bed still continuing to smoke account for 62.2 percent. (8). The time which the smokers who have the quitting desire spend in depression last week is longer than that of non-quitting desire smokers. (9). The quitting desire of the smokers are influenced by multitude factors such as marital status, depth of smoking, smoking attitude, quitting experience, etc. Conclusions: 1. The starting smoking ages of the smokers are low, so the smoking problem of about the adolescent should be concerned. 2. The proportion of moderate and severe smokers in this survey is high, therefore comprehensive interventions including cessation drugs ought to be taken for them to quit. 3. Most smokers have the desire and experience of quitting, but the quitting approaches is relatively single ,and easy to relapse, so more technical support and help concerning cessation should be provided. 4. The factors impact the cessation desire of the smokers are of variety, and the demands on quitting of the smokers are also different, so we should observe the "people first" principle and apply individual interventions.
