Objectives: To investigate the possible clinic featares and mechanism of central nervous system (CNS) infection caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) by clinical analysis, and elevate the level of diagnose and therapeutics.Methods: we retrospectively reviewed the clinic data of all the CNS infection include 24 cases of MP infected children from April 2006 through march 2008 in pedo-department of neurology in Shandong province hospital. Compared the symptoms, physical sign, laboratory examination and other auxiliary examination include the electroencephalogram (EEG), computed tomography(CT), magnetic resonance image(MRI) etc with diferent courses and diseases.Results: in 216 case of CNS infections 24 has the evidences of MP the ages of which ranged from 3 to 10 years ( mean, 7.2 years) and with a male-to-famale ratio of 11:13. the clinical manifestations included fever(87.5%), headache(83.3%), vomitus(41.7%), seizure(37.5%), conscious disturbance and personality or behavior changes ,visual hallucination, ataxia, Guillain-barrésyndrome, blurred vision, ect.Respiratory symptoms and signs were foud in 66.7% of the patients, only 25.0% were finding first. All the cases (except 1 discharged with voluntary) improved after being treated with Azithromycin or erythrocin.Conclusions: the diagnosis of central nervous infection with MP was established by the positive results in serum MP-IgM detection, cerebrospinal fluid changes and symptoms of nervous damages. The treatment with Azithromycin was effective and showed good prognosis in this disease.
