The Feature Of Sleep Structure In Epilepsy And It's Impact On Cognitive Function

objective To evaluate the feature of sleep structure in epilepsy and it's impact on cognitive function.Methods Totally 65 epilepsy patients aged 8～45 years and 16 age-and gender-matched as the control group were enrolled and recorded in the 12-h Polysomnogram(PSG). analyze the noctosomnostructure. Use Wechsler adult intelligence scale(WAIS-RC) to test these patients'intelligence.then analyze the sleep structure and the factors influencing the cognitive function.Results the mean of FIQ in epilepsy is 86.37±21.45.low intelligence quotient is in 20%. Compared to epilepsy patients with normal sleep structure, epilepsy patients with sleep disturbance are significantly decreased in IQ. and their sleep disturbance includes reduced time in slow wave sleep and their percentage,low sleep efficiency,increased time in sleep latency, decreased time in REM and their percentage, increased time in awaking and their percentage. It is suggested that the major factors interfering VIQ are reduced time in slow wave sleep,low sleep efficiency,increased sleep latency,decreased time in REM,increased time in awaking respectively.The important factors influencing PIQ are low sleep efficiency, reduced time in slow wave sleep, increased sleep latency, decreased time in REM,increased time in awaking respectively. The major factors influencing FIQ are reduced time in slow wave sleep, low sleep efficiency, increased sleep latency, decreased time in REM,increased time in awaking respectively.From regression analysis,the most critical factor influencing VIQ and FIQ is reduced time in slow wave sleep.nevertheless, low sleep efficiency is the most critical factor influencing PIQ. Conclusion epilepsy patients are apt to form sleep structure disorder, resulting in decreased cognitive function,furthermore,low cognitive function are affected by various factors.
