Objective:1.To investigate the correlation between the mobidity of children with asthma and expressing of adrenomedullin(AM) and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) in plasma. 2. To explore the possible mechanism and clinical meaning of increased AM levels in children with asthma.Method: The plasma AM and TNF-αconcentrations in 30 asthmatic children with an acute attack and 30 asthmatic children in remission stage were measured by radioimmunology. Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between these two variables and the airway interrupter resistance(Rint),partial pressure of oxygen(PaO2). 30 surgical subjects served as a control group. Result: The plasma AM and TNF-αconcentrations in asthmatic patients with an acute attack[(31.45±6.51)ng/L, (1.72±0.49) ng/L ]were significantly higher than those of stable asthmatic children[ (13.26±4.12) ng/L, (1.32±0.43) ng/L (P<0.01) ] and control group[(11.43±3.52)ng/L, (1.21±0.41)ng/L(P<0.01)]. The plasma AM concentrations were correlated positively with the plasma TNF-αconcentrations and Rint (r=0.55,P<0.01; r=0.73,P<0.01), and negatively with PaO2(r=-0.55,P<0.01). The plasma TNF-αconcentrations were correlated positively with Rint (r=0.69,P<0.01).Conclusion: 1.The interaction of AM and TNF-αmay play an important role in the pathogenesis of acute asthma. 2. Hypoxia may be one of the mechanisms that increase the plasma AM in asthmatic children. 3. The increase concentrations of TNF-αmay be one of the causes that increase the plasma AM in asthmatic children.
