Object To study the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment, prognostic factors of primary retroperitoneal tumor (PRT), and to provide references for diagnosis and treatment of PRT.Methods The clinical data of 63 patients with PRT treated at the first affiliated hospital of Guangxi Medical University from April 2000 to July 2006 were retrospectively analyzed including clinical manifestation, radiologic studies, pathologic examination and surgical procedures. 54 patients among them were followed up for period ranging between 11-60 months and analyzed for clinical and clinicopathologic data and survival correlation. Investigate the prognostic factors of PRT. Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank test were used to analyse the prognostic variables of PRT by SPSS 13.0 softwares.P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results There were 38 males and 25 females among the 63 patients. The ages of patients ranging were between 24 and 85 years and mean age was 51 years. The most common clinical manifestations in 63 cases of PRT included abdominal mass (55.6%), abdominal pain (42.9%), abdominal distention (14.3%)and loin pain (12.7%). The diagnostic rate by CT was 100%. There were 26 cases of benign tumor and 37 cases of malignant tumor. Of the 26 patients with benign tumor, 25 underwent complete surgical resection. Of the 37 patients with malignant tumor, 22 underwent complete resection. 25 patients are alive free of disease, 1 patient is alive with tumor and 28 patients died, among 54patients followed up. Survival analyes show that the overall median survival of 54 patients was 41 months. The 1,3,5-year survival rate of benign PRT was 100%,91.1 %,91.1 % and the 1,3,5-year survival rate of malignant PRT was 45.2%,23.8%,11.9% . 11 patients with whole resection had recurrence and 7 patients had resection again.Conclutions Abdominal mass in patients without other symptoms should be considered PRT. CT scan is the most important method for diagnosis of PRT. The complete resection is the best way of treatment, and it is one of the major factors in reducing recurrence. The recurrence tumor should be diagnosed early and be treated with reoperation.
