| Objective: To investigate the concentration of serum neuron specific enolase(NSE) in patients with acute traumatic brain injury(TBI).Methods The concentration of serum NSE in 90 patients with acute TBI between Oct 2006 to June 2007 was measured by IRMA. The patients were divided into three groups (minor, moderate, and severe) according to Glasgow coma scale(GCS).The prognosis was evaluated by serum NSE with GCS. The patients were divided into three groups(death, poor recovery, good recovery) about 3 months after traumatic brain injury, according to Glasgow outcome scale(GOS).Results The concentration of serum NSE in 90 patients with acute TBI was significantly higher than that in normal group(P<0.01).The level of serum NSE were the highest in severe group, and moderate group were higher than minor group. The concentration of serum NSE were the highest in death group, and poor recovery were higher than good recovery groups (P<0.05) . The concentration of serum NSE in worse prognosis group was significantly higher than in better prognosis group (P<0.01).Conclusion The serum NSE could be as a laboratory marker for traumatic brain injury. The method is simple, specific and sensitive. It's a credible way to evaluate the prognosis of acute TBI by measuring the concentration of serum NSE. |
