Objective: To assess effectiveness of meathord of supplementing and boosting the liver and kidney in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: We searched the MEDLINE,EMBASE, OVID database, CBMdisc, Cochrane Library Clinical Trial database, CNKI and hand searched the Journal of Chinese Journal of Rheumatology, Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Journal of Sichuan of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine[1996-2007.7]. The quality of the included studies was evaluated by two reviewers and meta-analysis performed for the results of the homogenous studies. Results: Four studies involving participants related to rheumatoid arthritis in Chinese were included. Four of the trial group use meathord of supplementing and boosting the liver and kidney , three of the control groups use Tabellae Glucosidorum Tripterygii Totorum ,and one of the control groups use Antine Capsule .All included studies were inadequate in reporting randomization, blinding and allocation concealment, and without withdraw, the baseline conditions of all studies were compared. Meta-analysis based on included studies showed that there was advantage after treatment in General Effectiveness [OR3.14,95% CI(1.86, 5.31)];Rheumatoid factor[WMD-12.66,95% CI(-18.75,-6.57)]; swelling of joint index[WMD-6.11, 95%CI(-7.24,-6.99)];Erythrocyte sedimentation rate[WMD-4.92, 95% CI(-6.31,-3.52)]; C reactive protein[WMD-6.12,95% CI(-7.91, -4.32)]; immuno globulin M[WMD-0.83,95% CI(-0.95,-0.72)]; immuno globulinG [WMD -2.53, 95% CI(-3.31,-1.40)]. Serious advers effect did not come about during therapy. Conclusions: Due to risk of selection bias, performance bias and published bias, the evidence is not strong enough to judge meathord of supplementing and boosting the liver and kidney in treating rheumatoid arthritis is better than Antine Capsule and Tabellae Glucosidorum Tripterygii Totorum in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Our conclusions suggest that larger-scale randomized trials should be performed in future.
