Objective:To study the clinical characteristics, and therapic method, and prognosis of male breast cancer by retrospectively analyze the male breast cancer patients who diagnosed and surgically treated at the First hosptial of Jilin University from 1980 to 2007.Materials and Methods: 38 eligible male patients with primary breast malignant tumor diagnosed and surgically treated at the First hosptial of Jilin University from 1980 to 2007 were retrospectively analyzed. Characteristics of the entire patients population are as follow: The patients are 38 to 75,and the median age is 57. The first symptom for all patients was a painless tumor under papillae and areola of breast, and 4 of them got a encroachment on skin ,10 patients had the symptom of nipple discharge, 20 patients were found local metastasis of lymph node in axillary by pathological diagnose after operation. And 34 of 38 patients were infiltrative duct carcinoma, 2 were infiltrative lobular carcinoma, 1 was carcinoma situ, 1 was intraductal papilloma cancerization. Patients were pathologically staged in accordance with AJCC (2006), 8 patients were stage I, 22 were stage II, 8 were stage III. 24 of all patients were received immunohistochemical determination, and 20 (83.3%) patients'estrogen receptor (ER) were positive, 24 (100%) patients'progesterone receptor (PR) were positive. All patients were received modified radical mastectomy, and were give adequate adjunctive therapy surch as chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and radiotherapy after operation. Kaplan-Meier Product Limit method was used to calculate the survival rate.Result:38 male patients account for 1.58% of all breast cancer patients in the same period in the First hosptial of Jilin University. The age of 2 patients were under 41, 6 were from 41 to 50, and 16 were from 51 to 60, 14 were over 60. The overall survival rate is 65.0%. Survival rate of patients with pathological stageI is 66.7%, stageII was 77.0%, stageIII is 41.7%(log-rank test is 9.591,P=0.008). Survival rate of patients of T1 is 75.0%,and T2 is 69.4%, T4 is 0%(log-rank test is 10.409,P=0.015).Conclusion: 1. MBC has a low incidence rate, and the age of onset is late. 2. The first symptom for MBC is a painless tumor under papillae and areola of breast. 3.The therapy of male breast cancer must be a systematic treatment including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and endocrine therapy, and the best type of operation is modified radical mastectomy. 4. The most common pathological type is infiltrative duct carcinoma, and lobular carcinoma is rare. 5.The major prognostic factors are the size of primary tumor, and clinical stage.
