Objectives:Transient ischemic attack is the recurrent, transient neurologic impairment induced by lack of cerebral blood supply. It is a complex state involving many causes and mechanisms. To comprehensively explore the etiology and the prognosis of TIA and offer feasible, scientific proof for the precaution of TIA and ischemic cerebral stroke. Methods:A case-control study between 282 TIA patients and 300 healthy people was carried out.All of the objects were admitted in the first hospital of Jilin university from 2006 to 2007. we analysed the etiology of TIA, which included age, hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, smoking, drinking, family cerebrovascular disease history, artherosclerosis plaqu, vessel stenosis. All data were analysed by chi-square test and logistic regression analysis in order to determine their affected degreeResults:1. Single factor analysis showed that hypertension, diabetes, smoking, artherosclerosis plaqu, vessel stenosis were related to TIA (P<0.05).2. Multiple condition logistic regression analysis showed that sex, hypertension, smoking, family cerebrovascular disease history, artherosclerosis plaqu, vessel stenosis were independent risk factors of TIA (P<0.05).3. followed with the increase of the age, the risks of cerebral infarction were significantly increased.we divided the patients into 7 groups according to age, the class interval was ten years. Followed with the increase of the age,the rates of CI were 100%, 10.53%, 18%, 18.63%, 23.94%, 20.59%, 60% respectively.4. The blood pressure level has significant relationship with the prognosis in the hypertension patient. There were 125 cases whose systolic blood pressure increased and 111 cases whose diastolic blood pressure increased. followed with the increase of the blood pressure, the risks of cerebral infarction were significantly increased.5. Serum glucose level has significant relationship with the prognosis in dialete patients.there were 21 patients whose serum glucose level were from 7 to 7.7, 5 cases suffered from CI. 15 patients were from 7.8 to 11.1, 4 cases (26.67%) suffered from CI. 16 patients were from 11.2 to 16.6,5 cases suffered from CI.and 13 patients were more than 16.7,6 cases suffered from CI.6. The prognosis between internal carotid artery system and vertebra-basilar artery system was different. 65 patients suffered from cerebral infarction following the onset of TIA in 282 patients, 49 cases in 164 (29.88%) cases resulted from internal carotid artery system. 7 cases in 118 (5.93%) with CI resulted from vertebral-basilar artery system, There was significantly different in above two artery systems.7. the proption of cerebral infarction was higher in the first week. There were 56 patients suffered from cerebral infarction,38 cases (67.86%) were in the first week, 47 cases (83.93%) were in the first month.Conclusions:1. The most important etiology leading to TIA were hypertension, smoking, family cerebrovascular disease history, artherosclerosis plaqu and vessel stenosis.2. There was close correlation between transient ischemic attack and hypertension or serum glucose level..3. The risks of cerebral infarction were significantly increased in the elder patients.4. The prognosis between vertebra-basilar artery system and internal carotid artery system was different.5. The proption of cerebral infarction was higher in the first week.
