Objective To study the effects of bFGF and mast cells on the initiation and development of hemangioma. Methods The skin specimens were taken during operation from those who were between 2-48 years old and didn't receive any treatment before. Specimens of capillary hemangioma and their stages were differentiated by HE staining. The proliferative and involuting stage specimens accepted immunohistologic staining of bFGF and a kind of special staining for each stage. Cell count and image analysis system were used to analyze the results. Results bFGF was positive mainly in cytoplasm and distributed in extracellular matrix in a light reticular form, it was highly expressed in hemangioma tissue while its expression was much lower in vascular malformation tissue (p<0.01), and the difference between bFGF expressions in proliferative and involuting stage was significant (p<0.05). The number and average optical density of mast cells in proliferative hemangioma increased obviously with significant differences. Conclusion This research revealed that bFGF and biological active factors secreted by mast cells were closely related with the initiation and development of skin hemangioma.
