Qualitative and quantitative analysis of gastrodia elata from six different areas have been done,and according to the active ingredient of lignans. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC), high performance lipid chromatography(HPLC), ultraviolet spectra and infra-red spectrum are used to do the tests.The ultraviolet and visible spectraotometry(UV-vis) for measuring the whole lignans contents were generally and systematically determined.The results show that the gastrodia elata from six different areas have similar chemical constitution,but the content of the available composition is not the same. The southern Gastrodia elata from YunNan province has no schizandrin B while northern Gastrodia elata has. There is also difference about the content of the available composition between northern Gastrodia elata which are from different areas. The gastrodia elata from JiLin province ChangBai Mountain area has the highest content of available composition.The study provide basis for evaluating the source and quality of gastrodia elata as well as some new methods for medicine development.
