Objective To study the relevance between high serum uric acid and carotid atherosclerosis as well as to discuss its clinical meaning on the prediction for acute cerebral infarction. Methods To assay the serum uric acid levels, fasting blood glucose, blood lipid et al in 120 cases of cerebral infarction patients(patients group)and 110 cases of health cheek(control group)by Hplc.At the same time,Doppler ultrasongraphy was applied to assay the carotid artery. The patients were divided into normal intima group, thick intima group, mild, moderate, severe straitmess of carotid artery and plague group, stable plague group and unstable plague group according to characteristic of hypersound picture,The level of serum uric avid in every group was compared.Result The prevalence of carotid artery plaque in acute cerebral infarction group and control group were 79.17%(95/120)and 35.45%(39/110)respectively.The difference was significant statistically(P<0.01).In acute cerebral infarction group, the plaque was located in the bifurcation of the carotid artery; The plague occurrence rate was higher in cerebral artery than that in non-cerebral arteries. There were 53 cases and 14 cases whose serum uric acid levels have increased respectively, which account for 44.17%and 12.73%,with plasma concentration being 472.5±90.12umol/L and 324.13±89.12umol/L respectively. The difference was significant statistically (P<0.01).The content of serum uric acid was correlated with the prognosis of cerebral infarction patients. The patients with higher serum uric acid concentration had bad prognosis. The degree of the strictness of carotid artery was higher in high serum uric acid cerebral infarction patients than that in normal serum uric acid cerebral infarction patients. The difference was significant statistically(P<0.01).Conclusion Carotid arteriosclerosis is pathological basis of cerebral infarction, High levels of uric acid in plasma should be an independent risk factor in arteriosclerosis and also the independent risk factor for cerebral infarction.
