ObjetiveTo study the effect of TNF-αand IL-18 on the process of progressing hepatic fibrosis in patients with BA(biliary atresia).MethodsInfants with BA (20), patients with jaundice caused by other diseases (20) and normal ones (20) were included in this study. The level of TNF-αand IL-18 in serum was detected by ELISA. The level and spots of TNF-αand IL-18 in liver were inspected by immunohistochemical stain. And the degree of bile duct obstruction and hepatic fibrosis were both examined through hematoxylin and eosin stain.ResultsThe level of TNF-αand IL-18 of BA patients both in serum and in liver are higher significantly than normal infants (P<0.05) and than those with jaundice caused by other diseases (P<0.05). The degree of bile duct obstruction and hepatic fibrosis both have positive correlation significantly with the level of TNF-α(P<0.05), but neither with that of IL-18 (P>0.05).Conclusions TNF-αand IL-18 play an important role in promoting the process of bile ducts obstruction and hepatic fibrosis in patients with BA.
