The cleft lip and palate are congenital facial deformities with high occurrence rate about 1.8/1000 in China. Nowadays the main treatment procedure is by operation involving Millard or Tennison methods in Cleft lip (CL) and palatoplasty and pharyngoplasty methods in Cleft palate (CP). Owing to the complexities in cleft lip and palate, the operation methods have been improved greatly during the past half century, we still can't anticipate the post-surgery achievement precisely. It's a barrier between doctors and patients. At the same time, it is very difficult for junior doctors to learn, due to the especial training program. At the present stage, the enhanced pre-operation communication between doctors and patients, the application to apprenticeship model and human cadavers are proved to be very helpful. Since the eighties of the past century, with the development and advancement of computer science and digital graphics, we have a new way to solve the problem, which is Virtual Surgery(VS).Virtual Surgery is a new branch of computer science. By applying of various medical image data and the virtual reality technology, a simulate platform can be built in the computer. Using the information drawing from this simulate environment, surgeons can determine operation plan, carry out simulate training, and even guide the operation during practical surgery. The development of modern science always accompanies intersection and penetration of different subjects. Virtual Surgery is a new field involving many areas incorporated medical science, biomechanics, mechanics, materials science, computer graphics, computer vision science, mathematical analysis, mechanics of machinery and robotics, etc. The purpose of VS is to guide the process of practical surgery with the help of computer technology. On time section it consists of pre-operation and post-operation; on function section, it covers from the operation planning, the rehearsal, the simulation training, guiding during operation to healing after operation, etc. Virtual Surgery, as software, consists of several steps. The geometric modeling, physical modeling and numeration modeling are the most highlight steps, which also reflect the reciprocity of the VS. Visualization is the main part of modeling, which determine the practicability and reliability of VS within certain extent. It is also the emphasis in our research.The history and the development of VS system was introduced in this research. The fundamentality of modeling was expatiated. The trait and predominance of VTK(Visualization Tool Kit) was summarized. C-mean algorithm was enhanced and applied to improve model accuracy.Our objective is to explore a more efficient and more precise method in construction of visualization model on cleft lip and palate. Thin-layer CT scanning was employed to obtain the original data. Image segmentation was executed based on c-mean clustering. The program main framework was written by Visual C++.net. At last a visualization model was finally constructed. A more precise visualization model of cleft lip and palate was constructed. It was proved to be more convenient, more efficient and more universal. If the appropriate medical data is provided, we can get high quality visualization model, not only for cleft lip and palate. So it is a precise, efficient and promising way to develop the visualization model by VTK technology.We expanded our research on the simulating bone cutting and fixation. It was a beneficial trial for the final construction of the VS system and will also be the main content in our further research.
