Objective: To investigate the status of published medicine papers from 1994 to 2005, give a basic view on the research level, find the distribution characteristic, reflect the developing image of medicine research in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in recent 12 years; and develop the forecasting model for forecast the medical papers' development trend in the future 5 years, to provide constructive information for optimization of the scientific research administration. Methods: By adopting bibliometrics and statistical methods, All published medicine papers and relative statistic data in Chinese Journal Full-Text Database (CJFD) during last 12 years (1994-2005) are analyzed. Results: In Xinjiang area, there published 28268 medicine papers during the recent 12 years. Of which, the annually increase rate was 11.80%, National Core Journal Rate was 17.17%, and the local Journal Rate was 30.51%. Three units rank ahead were hospital (21851 papers), medical education and research organizations (3752 papers), and public health agency (1720 papers), which account for 96.66% of all papers. The published papers were mainly from Urumqi (14721 papers), Shihezi (3422 papers) and Yili (1351 papers), which occupy about 68.96% of all papers published. The papers were mainly from three disciplines: clinic medicine (17882 papers), Chinese medicine (4808 papers), preventive medicine and public health (2669 papers), all of which share about 89.71% of all papers. There were 28 units which published over 15 papers each year, among which Urumqi hospital of Lanzhou military area (2258 papers), the first teaching hospital of Xinjiang medical university (2256 papers), and Xinjiang medical university (1453 papers) rank ahead. There were 44 authors who published over 18 papers in recent 12 years, of which the number 1 author published 68 papers, and cooperation degree is 3.02. It is forcasted that there will be 27040 medicine papers in 5 years. By 2010, the National Corner Journal Rate will be 6.64%. Conclusions: The amount of medicine papers of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has been rising in the recent 12 years. The provincial journal takes an important role. The disparity in different local region, unit and discipline varied greatly, which suggests there is a big growing space for the papers production. However, the cooperation and information awareness of the medical personnel needs to be improved, and the paper's quality should be improved in the future.
