Objective:To establish a method of collecting bilateral tensor veli palatini(TVP)electromyographic date simultaneously.To analyze the characteristic of electromyographic date.To compare the different characteristic between different sites of insertion for TVP,and between dry swallowing and liquid swallowing.Methods:A total of 20 healthy volunteers,age range 24~36 years were studied,the standard is that:neither reported a history of middle ear problems or nasopharyngeal neoplasms,nor did they have a sensation of fullness,hearing loss,middle ear effusion and any other symptons about nasopharyngeal infection;audiometric tests, tympanograms were normal;physical examninations of the ears and nasopharynx through nasopharyngoscope.After the nasal cavities of the volunteers were decongested and topically anesthetized,the specially designed concentric needle electrode was inserted in the site of the TVP intranasally under the guidance of nasopharyngo scope.And then all the volunteers were asked to perform a series of dry swallowing.Choosing 8 volunteers to perform a series of liquid swallowing,to compare the different characteristic of Eletromyography (EMG)between dry swallowing and liquid swallowing.Choosing the Other 6 volunteers to compare the different characteristic of EMG between different sites of insertion for TVP. Results:The swallowing EMG recording of normal TVP(20 volunteers,38 sides)in this study demonstrated that the TVP contraction activity lasting(0.863±0.255)S,with a peak amplitude of(445.100±246.808)μV,waveform of the EMG was full interference pattern,during swallowing,hibateral TVP were observed contractingsimultaneously,there was no sign derangement.The TVP yields two- or three-phase waveforms of motor unit action potentials with amplitude of(254.260±191.544)μV,duration of(9.142±2.178) ms.Comparing the different characteristic of EMG(contractio activity lasting time,the peak amplitude,the time course and the amplitude of TVP motor unit action)between different sites of insertion for TVP about 6 volunteers,no statistically significant differences were found(P>0.05).But the waveform of middle site was more stable than the up site and the low site.Comparing the different characteristic of TVP EMG(contraction activity lasting time,the peak amplitude,the time course and the amplitude of TVP motor unit action)between dry swallowing and liquid swallowing about 9 volunteers,no statistically significant differences were found(P>0.05).These results indicated that the efficacy of TVP contracting was no significant differences between dry swallowing and liquid swallowing.When the scanner speed of EMG was adjusted to 5ms/div,it could be observed that the waveforms of liquid swallowing was more stable around base line than the dry swallowing,to mean that the waveforms of liquid swallowing was analysised more easier. Conclusion:The swallowing EMG recording of normal TVP(20 volunteers,38 sides)in this study demonstrated that the TVP contraction activity lasting(0.863±0.255)S,with a peak amplitude of(445.100±246.808)μV,waveform of the EMG was full interference pattern,during swallowing,hibateral TVP were observed contracting simultaneously,there was no sign derangement.The TVP yields two- or three-phase waveforms of motor unit action potentials with amplitude of(254.260±191.544)μV,duration of(9.142±2.178)ms.Sufficient decongesting and topically anesthetizing to the nasal cavities,inserting in the up site of TVP,quantitative liquid swallowing,above all is an excellent method to investigate the EMG of TVP.
