The functional goals of cleft palate surgery are to result in velopharyngeal competence and facilitate normal speech by restablishing the function of the levator veli palatini . But there are always maxillary and dento-alveolar deformity after primary palatoplasty . It is difficult for plastic surgeon to accomplish the basic goals of achieving good speech results without interfering with the facial growth in the treatment of cleft palate repair . So, it is very importment for us to study the anatomy of the cleft and analyze the scientific and physiological characteristics of every method for cleft palate repair in order to improve velopharyngeal function . Now , it has been regarded that reconstruction of an adequately functioning , soft palate with levator veli palatini sling are more crucial for obtaining the desired speech results . In another way ,every surgeon must explore the causes of this disturbed maxillary and dentoalveolar growth and think about how to prevent this kind of malformation .
