Purpose: to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of ozonated water to the putative periodontopathic bacteria :Porphyromonas gingivalis,Haemop-hilus actinomycetemcomitans and Fusobacterium nucleatum, and discuss the feasibility of applying ozonated water as a new plaque-control method.Method: (1)using the specific iodine method to measure the concentration of ozone in ozonated water, and according to the gragh , the ozonated water of maximam concentration (0.12mg/L) can be obtained at the 12th minute; (2)diluting 0.12mg/L ozonated water to 0.06mg/L and 0.03mg/L, then using the ozonated water of the three different concentrations to do the antimicrobial experiment to Pophyromonas gingivalis, Haemophilus actinomycetemcomitans , Fusobacterium nucleatum and Porphyromonas gingivalis(clinical separating trunk) with H2O2 as the positive control and distilled water as the negative control.Result: the antimicrobial rate of ozonated water elevates as the concentration and the action time increase. The antimicrobial rate of 0.12mg/L ozonated water is no less than 90%, and that of 0.06mg/L ozonated water and 0.03mg/L ozonated water is about 60% and 30% respectively. In contrast with it, all the antimicrobial rates of 3%H2O2, 1.5% H2O2 and 0.75% H2O2 are no less than 95%.Discussion: the ozonated water has certain antimicrobial effect to the putative periodontopathic bacteria:Porphyromonas gingivalis, Haemop-hilus actinomycetemcomitans and Fusobacterium nucleatum. It may be applied as a new plaque-control method with its cheapness and convenience to be obtained.
