Objective: To explore and assess the relationship between the intelligence statement, social functioning disability extent and the capacities of criminal responsibility of patients with schizophrenia (SP) which were defendants of being involved in crime.By the study,it found some factors related to the criminal responsibilities. In order to provide scientific reference for the forensic psychiatry assessment with patients of schizophrenia. Methods: Data collected from 274 suspected offenders with schizophrenia,it was as Research Group and there were 123 normal suspected offenders as Control Group were used a scale of forensic psychiatric assessment designed by our institution which included demographic items, and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised of China ( WAIS-RC ),and Social Disability Screening Schedule (SDSS).The statistical description,χ~2-test,χ~2-test,Pearson r Correlation and Logistic Regression analyses were used in the study. Results: 1.The intelligence statement of patients with schizophrenia:The Full-scale Intelligence Quotient (FIQ) from the patients with SP (74.14±15.577) was lower than that from normal offenders ( 78.38±16.286 ) with statistical difference, 1=2.215, P<0.05; and the Verbal Intelligence Quotient (VIQ) from the patients with SP (79.96±15.328) was lower than that from normal offenders (83.88±15.522) with statistical difference, t=2.263, P<0.05; and the Performance Intelligence Quotient (PIQ) from the patients with SP (70.31±16.578) was much lower than that from normal offenders ( 76.66±17.130) with significant statistical difference, t=3.129, P<0.01.The T-test to each subtest of WAIS-RC in two both groups showed that there were no statistical differences within Information (t=0.179),Comprehension (t=0.984),Digit Span (1=0.141) and there were statistical differences within Arithmetic (t=2.066),Similarities (t=3.786 ),Vocabulary (t=2.840),Digit Symbol (t=4.288 ),Picture Completion (t=2.422),Block Design (t=4.004),Picture Arrangement (t=3.025 ),Object Assembly (t=3.343).2. The relationship between the intelligence and the capacities of criminal responsibility of schizophrenia:The Pearson r Correlation showed no statistical significance on the relationship between each intelligence test and the criminal responsibilities: Information ( r=0.123, P=0.066),Comprehension ( r=-0.041, P=0.543 ),Arithmetic ( r=-0.001, P=0.985 ),Similarities ( r=0.042, P=0.528),Digit Span (r=0.082, P=0.224),Vocabulary (r=0.126, P=0.053),VIQ (r=0.074, P=0.271),Digit Symbol (r=0.038, P=0.569 ),Picture Completion (r=0.073, P=0.276),Block Design ( r=-0.015, P=0.821 ),Picture Arrangement ( r=0.069, P=0.305),Object Assembly (r=-0.002, P=0.974),PIQ (r=0.026, P=0.705),FIQ (r=0.070, P=0.294). 3.The social function disability of patients with schizophrenia:There were 11 schizophrenic patients with social functioning (SDSS≤2) (4.02%), and 263 patients with social dysfunction (SDSS>2) (95.98%) ;there were 104 normal offenders with social functioning ( 84.55% ).The T-test to each subtest in SDSS of two groups showed that there were significant statistical differences within Occupational role (t=12.408),Marital role (t=7.921),Parental role (t=8.113),Social withdrawal (t=6.946),Social activities (t=9.387),Underactivity in household (t=5.075),Household role performance (1=19.330),Care of self (t=11.485),Outside interests and general orientation ( t=8.639 ),Responsibility and forward planning (t=19.921) and SDSS summary (t=20.154).4.The relationship between the social function and the capacities of criminal responsibility of schizophrenia: The Pearson r Correlation showed statistical significance on the relationship between the capacity of criminal responsibility and Occupational role (r=0.243, P=0.000),Social activities (r=0.140, P=0.021),Household role performance (r=0.212, P=0.000 ),Care of self ( r=0.152, P=0.012),Outside interests and general orientation (r=0.129, P=0.033 ),Responsibility and forward planning ( r=0.195, P=0.001),SDSS total scores (r=0.270, P=0.000).The Logistic Regression analysis-Backwaid Stepwise Wald with 7 subtests above showed that Occupational role (OR=1.659 ),Responsibility and forward planning (OR=1.235), SDSS total scores (OR=1.149) had more effect on the assessment of the capacity of criminal responsibilities. Conclusions: 1.FIQ and PIQ of schizophrenic patients was lower than that of normal offenders.Compared with the comparison group, there were no obvious differences with the aspects of Information,Comprehension and Digit Span. There were significant distinguish with the factors of Arithmetic,Similarities,Vocabulary,Digit Symbol,Picture Completion,Block Design,Picture Arrangement,Object Assembly.2.There was not relationship between WAIS-RC subtests and the capacities of criminal responsibility.3.Compared with the Control Group, each items in social function of schizophrenic patients had been damaged with different extents. It was obvious deficits in the aspects of Occupational role,Social activities,Household role performance,Care of self,Responsibility and forward planning and SDSS summary.4.It was related between the capacity of criminal responsibilities and. Occupational role,Social activities,Household role performance,Care of self,Outside interests and general orientation,Responsibility and forward planning and SDSS total scores. And 7 aspects may be used as references parameters.Occupational role,Responsibility and forward planning,SDSS total scores had more influence on the assessment of criminal responsibilities.
