Objective: To compare the different anti-tumor effect between Herba Prunellae Vulgaris and Spica Prunellae Vulgaris (HPV and SPV for short, respectively), and to approach whether the therapeutic effect of HPV can substitute for that of SPV. Method: The influences of HPV and SPV on some indexes of the tumor-bearing mice were observed through the zoopery, such as life quality, body weight, weight of tumor and inhibitory rate (IR), weights and indices of thymus gland and spleen, contents of Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and Interleukin-2 (IL-2) in serum, and pathological sections of tumor tissues. Result: Both HPV and SPV can improve life qualities of the mice and protect their immune systems to some extent. Also, two kinds of effects were showed in the treatment groups of HPV and SPV with large doses (0.6g/ml): 1) IR of the former was obviously higher than that of the latter (59.7% versus 43.9%); 2) HPV had an advantage over SPV in improving the contents of TNF-alpha and IL-2 in serum (P<0.05). Conclusion: The anti-tumor effect of HPV is not inferior to SPV, which is worthwhile to do further research.
