Objective: To investigate the CHD-related knowledge level of inpatients; to explore the factors that having relationship with the CHD-related knowledge level; to probe the role of the education pamphlets and the personal education. Methods: The study, which was used an quasi-experimental design, was conducted at 2 Cardiovascular Wards in a provincial hospital and a municipal hospital in Changsha. From September 2006 to January 2007, purposive samples of 92 patients were selected as the subjects of the study. Instruments used for data collection were composed of 2 parts: Demographic Data Recording Form (DDRM) and the CHD-related Knowledge Scale. Data were collected before and after the personal specified education. Descriptive analysis, chi-square test, two-sample t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Wilcoxon rank sum test, paired t-test and repeated measurement ANOVA were performed using with the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 13.0.Results:1. The score of CHD-related knowledge was low in the inpatients with CHD, the average score was 0.60±0.17 (Total score is 1) . The average score of the secondary prevention knowledge is the highest among the 8 factors, which is 0.85±0.18, while the average score of the medication knowledge is the lowest, 0.20±0.20. 2. The knowledge level was correlated with patients' level of literacy, and average income; it didn't seem to have much correlation with the age, gender, diet habit, activity level, times of hospitalization, body weight index, waist circs, marital status and smoking.3. The patients' score of CHD-related knowledge increased significantly (from 0.60±0.17 to 0.71±0.14) after receiving the personal specified education and reading the pamphlets.4. The factor of the medication knowledge increased mostly among the 8 factors( from 0.20±0.20 to 0.48±0.25) after the personal specified education, but the average level was still low.Conclusion:1. The score of CHD-related knowledge was low in inpatients with CHD; patients seemed to have a better understanding about secondary prevention knowledge, a poorer understanding about medication knowledge, also was the second poor in mastery of the clinical manifestation and precipitation factors.2. Patients who received higher education and who got a higher income seemed to have better knowledge, patients who had been hospitalized 2 or more times didn't have better knowledge.3. The personal specified education and the pamphlet can play an important role in increasing the inpatients' health knowledge, particularly the medication knowledge. 4. It is better for the nurses to assess the patient's literacy and the CHD-related knowledge level before giving the health education, and to deliver the health information personally.
