Objective: (1) Develop a Psychological Inpatient scale assessing psychological status of inpatients over 16 years og age and without psychiatric disorders.(2) Examine the reliability and validity of the scale. Methods: We identified the scale's structure and function based on results obtained from interviews as well as modern psychological theories. 600 inpatients from 6 hospitals in Changsha city were recruited for this study. Test-retest was done on 40 participants at a 7-10 days interval. The reliability analysis included the Cronbach's a , split- half reliability and test-retest reliability. The validity analysis included content, construct, and criterion-related validity. Results: (1) Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 35-item scale which was retained in the final version of the scale. (2) Reliability test: The Cronbach's a coefficients for the scale and subscales were 0.941 and between 0.791 and 0.881, respectively. Split-half test coefficients for the scale and subscales were 0.902 and between 0.757 and 0.876 (p< .01), respectively. Test-retest coefficients for the scale and subscales were 0.851 and between 0.599 and 0.724 (p< .01), respectively. (3) Validity test: Exploratory principal component analysis of the scale's items identified a five first-order factors model that accounted for 52.534% of the total variance. Subscale correlations showed that correlations ranged from 0.375 to 0.707 between subscales and from 0.643 to 0.903 between the subscales and total scale. The correlation coefficient with SCL-90 was 0.732, and most of the subscales' coefficients of PSI and SCL-90 were above 0.300. Gender, age, hospitalization unit, job profession, and marital status were alos found to influence psychological status of inpatients. Conclusions: A series of reliability tests showed that the scale conformed to adequate measurement standards. The content, concurrent and criterion-related validities were good.
