Objectives and methodsTo analyze 53 outpatients and inpatients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) treated by Ophthalmic Dept. of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from Jan. 2006 to Mar. 2OO7. Observe the syndrome distribution of the patients and read the results of visual field examination (right eye only); then analyze serial indexes of visual field examination and compare the results with syndrome distribution to get to know whether there is pertinence between them or not, therefore, provide an objective basis for clinical syndrome differentiation of Traditional Chinese Medicine in future.ResultsWe studied the TCM symptoms of 53 DR patients who were conducted visual field examination. As to the TCM syndrome distribution, Yin deficiency.accounts for 17 cases (32.08%) and deficiency of both Qi and Yin accounts for 19 cases (35.84%), while deficiency of both Yin and Yang accounts for 17 cases (32.08%). According to the results of visual field examination, the mean sensitivity in most of them dropped. The descent in Yin deficiency type is slightly and in deficiency of both Qi and Yin is more distinct, while in deficiency of both Yin and Yang type even more. The comparison between any two types among them has statistic significance (P<0.01). The results indicates that the change of light sensitivity shows positive correlation when the symptoms transformed from Yin deficiency and deficiency of both Qi and Yin to deficiency of both Yin and Yang.ConclusionsThe visual field defect shows a positive correlation along with the change of TCM pathogenesis of DR (transformed from transformed from Yin deficiency and deficiency of both Qi and Yin to deficiency of both Yin and Yang). Therefore, taking visual field examination as an objective basis in clinical syndrome differentiation will help to improve the accuracy of syndrome differentiation and then the patients will be treated more effectively based on the syndrome. Thereby, the healthy life of patients will be enhanced.
