The edema of extremity is the common symptom after orthopedicoperation and is also one of the problems that must be solved. Bothtraditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and modern medicine have systematicknowledge of it and provide a series of ways to treat it. Based on the pointsof traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and modern medicine on the edema ofextremity, the thesis discusses and summarizes the research of the two kindsof medicine on etiology and pathogenesis of the edema of extremity as wellas on the treatments. About several thousand years ago, our ancestors cameto know that the edema of extremity was caused by blood stasis. As one ofthe main point of TCM formula, prescription of stimulating blood circulationto end stasis was used widely in clinic. A good many physicians' wisdom andpainstaking effort contributed to its long history of forming and developing. The modern study confirms that the drug of stimulating blood circulationto end stasis has the function of promoting blood circulation to relievestasis, and can lower blood viscosity and red blood cells' aggregation index, raise red blood cells' distortion ability and prolong prothrombin time, soas to improve blood hypercoagulability, and relieve the symptoms of painand the edema of extremity. According to the theory of TCM, we use the method of stimulating blood circulation to end stasis and diuresis to treat theedema of extremity after orthopedic operation and observe the effect. Methods: According to different treatment, 62 adult patients with the edemaof extremity after orthopedic operation in our hospital from Feb., 2006 toMarch, 2007 were divided randomly into two groups. The therapy group has34 patients (18 men, 16 women) and the control group has 28 patients (16men, 12 women). There was no obvious difference (P>0.05) between two groupsin the average age, the kind of fracture, the degree of the edema. The therapygroup received the method of stimulating blood circulation to end stasisand diuresis, while the control group received the method of stimulatingblood circulation to end stasis (Tao Hong Si Wu Tang). We recorded andcompared the degree of the ache, the total effectiye rate and thecircumference of body. Results: 1. During the second, forth and sixth day after operation, therewas no obvious difference between two groups in the degree ofthe ache of the body.2. During the fifth day after operation, the effective rate of thetherapy group and the control group was 76.5%and 54.1%respectively. The effective rate of therapy group was higher thanthat of control group.3. Two weeks later, the effective rate of the therapy group andthe control group was 97%and 89.3%respectively, and both groupshad satisfying curative effect, but there were obviousdifferences (P<0.05) between two groups. Conclusion: The method of stimulating blood circulation to end stasis anddiuresis is better than the method of stimulating blood circulation to endstasis in curing the edema of extremity after orthopedic operation.
