Petasites hybridus L., the dried root of Petasites hybridus L. in Compositae, is a traditional medicine mostly used as anti-allergy, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammoary agents. It can also inhibit the production of leukotriene, and histamine, treat or prevent migraines, asthma, ulcers, and high fever. The EtOAC portion of 80% EtOH extract of this plant was studied in this thesis. Ten compounds were isolated by column chromatographic methods using silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, and recrystallization. On the basis of chemical evidence and spectral analysis, the structures of seven compounds were elucidated as 6β-angeloyloxy-3β, 8β-dihydroxyeremophil-7(11)-en -12,8α-olide(1), hexadecylic acid(2), angelic acid(3), dibutyl terephthalate(4), 1-0-palmitoylglycerol(5), P-sitosterol(6), n-dotriacontanol(7). Among them, compound 2, 4, 5, 7 were isolated from this species for the first time. The relative configuration of compound 1 was elucidated by X-ray single crystal diffraction.Apium graveolens L., the fresh whole plant of Apium graveolens L. in Umbelliferae. , is a normal vegetable to people. It had the effects on treating epilepsy, hyperlipemia, and hypertension; it also can protect the brain cells and enhance the studying ability and memory. As an ordinary vegetable in daily life, celery has a lot of pharmaceutical activity, and people pay more attention on its chemical constituents. But its polar portion of the whole plant was hardly studied. In this thesis, the chemical constituents of the EtOAc, n-BuOH and water extract of Apium graveolens L. were studied. Nine constituents were isolated by silica gel column, Diaion HP-20, polyamide column, Sephadex LH-20 column, ODS column and HPLC. On the basis of the chemical evidence and spectral analysis, the structures of seven compounds were elucidated, including D-allitol(1), sedanolide(2),β-sitosterol (3), apigenin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl(2-1)-β-D -apiopyranoside(4), apigenin (5), 3-O-caffeoyl-quinic acid (6), (2S)-1-O-(7Z, 10Z, 13Z-hexadecatrienoyl)-3-O-β-galactopyranosylglycerol (7). Among them, compound 1, 7 was isolated from this plant for the first time.
