Objective: To assess the changes of left and right ventricular function in children with simple obesity using Doppler Tei index. Methods Left and right ventricular Tei index,Isovolumic relaxation time/ Ejection time (IRT/ET),Isovolumic contraction time/ Ejection time (ICT/ET),Ejection fraction(EF),Fractional Shortening(FS),E/A,LVDV,LVSV,IVST,LVPWT were calculated with ALOKA SSD-5500 ultrasonic system in 60 normal children and 102 children with simple obesity . Results 1. There are not significant difference in the left ventricular Ejection fraction (EF),Fractional Shortening (FS) and E/A of left ventricular between the children with simple obesity and normal children (P>0.05). 2. There are not significant difference in the right ventricular Ejection fraction (EF),Fractional Shortening (FS) and E/A between the children with simple obesity and normal children (P>0.05).3. There are significant difference in LVDV,LVSV,IVST,LVPWT of left ventricular between the children with simple obesity and normal children (P<0.01).4.The left ventricular Tei index (LV-Tei),Isovolumic relaxation time/ Ejection time (LV-IRT/ET) are higher in the children with simple obesity than in the normal children(P<0.01). Isovolumic contraction time/ Ejection time (LV-ICT/ET) is higher in the children with simple obesity than in the normal children (P<0.05). 5. The right ventricular Tei index (RV-Tei),Isovolumic relaxation time (RV-IRT/ET) are both higher in the children with simple obesity than in the normal children (P<0.01). Isovolumic contraction time/ Ejection time (RV-ICT/ET) is higher in the children with simple obesity than in the normal children (P<0.05).Conclusions Measurement of the Tei index is a reliable technique in the diagnosis and assessment of heart function in children with simple obesity.
