Objective To observe short-term results and complications of trabeculectomyaugmented with mitomycin C (MMC) in treating glaucoma, and compare withstandard trabeculectomy. Methods 58 cases (61 eyes) of glaucoma were divided into two groups. In theMMC group, 0.4mg/ml MMC was used intraoperatively for 3 minutes. No MMCwas used in the control group. After operation, both two groups were observed for3 days. Results Postoperatively, the mean IOP of the MMC group and the control groupwere 32.6±12.3 mmHg and 30.0±13.6 mmHg , there was no significant differencebetween the two groups. The mean postoperative IOP of the MMC group was8.6±5.5 mmHg, while that of the control group was 13.4±6.0 mmHg, having asignificant difference statistically. Meantime, eyesight, anterior chamber depth andcomplications between the two groups do not differ much. Conclusion With the use of mitomycin C, trabeculectomy can achieve lower IOPpostoperatively, but there is still complications, so MMC should be used cautiously.
