Preliminary Clinical Study Of The Apodized Diffractive Multifocal Intraocular Lens

PURPOSE To evaluate the visual outcomes,depth of focus,contrast sensitivity(CS), postoperative high order wavefront aberrations(HOAs) and safety in eyes implanted with the AcrySof SA60D3 ReSTOR multifocal intraocular lens (Alcon Laboratories) and compare with Acrysof Natural (the monofocal IOL, Alcon Laboratories).METHODS Nonrandomized clinical trial. 31 patients with age-related cataract(38 eyes)were divided into two groups :Acrysof ReSTOR group(MIOL) included 12 patients(15 eyes),and reference group-Acrysof Natural group (MoIOL) included 19 patiendt (23 eyes).All patients underwent phacoemulsification and IOL implantation. At 1 week,1 month and 3 months postoperatively,distant and near visual acuities were observed,and depth of focus, high order wavefront aberrations and Contrast Sensitivity were measured 3 months postoperatively. Spectacle dependence, unwanted visual symptoms ,and patient satisfaction were asked at 3 months by questionnaire.RESULTS At 3 months postoperatively and monocularly, In MIOL group, themean UCDVA, BCDVA ,UCNVA ,BCNVA and BDNVA were 0.87±0.11, 0.91±0.10, 0.70±0.14, 0.71±0.24, 0.72±0.11 respectively. And in MoIOL group ,they were 0.85 ± 0.11, 0.88 ± 0.12, 0.31 ± 0.07, 0.63 ± 0.16, 0.24 ± 0.08, respectively. The UCDVA and UCNVA were significantly better than that of MoIOL. In MIOL group, The UCDVA,UCNVA at 1 month were significantly better than that of 1 week.The ReSTOR IOL group showed statistically significant less induction of high order wavefront aberrations when compared to the monofocal IOLs (p<0.05 = . Mean contrast sensitivity values were lower in the ReSTOR group but had no statistical significance, the questionnaire showed that patients in ReSTOR group,the spectacle independence and patient's satisfaction were high,and unwanted photicphenomena were clinically acceptable.CONCLUSION Acrysof ReSTOR IOL can provide excellent outcomes both indistants and near visions and it may reduce the dependence on spectacles in near vision and improve the quality-of-life.
