Carbamazepine is a frequently used drug for epilepsy and peripheral neuralgia. Recently, because of its considerable application, morbidity of drug eruption-especially severe drug eruption, increases year by year. The most common types of SDE include toxic epidermal necrolysis, exfoliative dermatitis and erythema multiforme major, which involves Stevens-Johnson syndrome. To study their clinical feature and management, we analysed 8 cases of carbamazepine induced-eruption from 198 patients who had been subjected to drug eruption in our hospital during the 8 years from 2000 to 2006. Among the 8 cases, there were 4 cases with toxic epidermal necrolysis(TEN), 3 with Stevens-Johnson syndrome(SJS), and 1 with exfoliative dermatitis(ED). The clinical manifestations of them included mucocutaneous eruption related erythema multiforme, abnormal liver and kidney functions to some degree, long duration and effective systematic treatment with corticosteroids. At the end, we came to the conclusion that caramazepine should be carefully used. Severe drug eruption caused by it usually damage some organs and lasts a long time. The proper use of corticosteroids is the way out.
