Background : Hyponatremia frequently develops in the decompensated cirrhotic patients whose ability to excrete free water is impaired, that is mostly induced by the chronic diuretic for ascites. But the adverse impact on prognosis to the decompensated cirrhotic patients because hyponatremia is not paid attention enough till now.Aim: To observe and discuss the prevalence, clinical associations and prognostic impact of hyponatremia in cirrhotic inpatients, and in order to provide the reference of the reasonable treatment of cirrhosis ascites. Methods: The 280 cases of patients with cirrhosis ascites were studied, who were consecutively admitted to our department in 2005, and evidenced by Ultrasonography(US) B or computed tomography(CT). Serum electrolytes, functions of hepatic and renal were obtained within the 24 hous in all patients on admission and all those were repeated at least weekly. In patients with abnormal serum sodium levels, serum electrolytes levels were monitored every other day. Hyponatremia was defined as a serum sodium concentration <135mmol/l(group B), and was divided into "mild"(130-134mmol/l, group B1) and "mid-severe"(<130mmol/l, group B2) in accordance with date reported in the literature. Patients with normal serum sodium (=135mmol/l) was as group A. To evaluate the therapeutic effect of ascites two weeks later by Ultrasonography B, analyse the cimplication and prognosis as soon as the patients were out of the hospital. Results:(1) 89 cases of hyponatremia were found in 280 inpatients(31.8%), in...
