Background: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are series of diseases which characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms, but no organic or/and structural abnomorality can be found. FGIDs are classified into 28 diseases for adults according to the Rome III criteria. They are commonly seen in foreign countries, but no data of the incidence and related factors about the FGIDs of the university students in China can be achieved. Objective: To investigate the incidence and related factors of the FGIDs among the university students in Beijing. To approach the onset and related factors of the FGIDs and to evaluate the health related quality of life (HRQOL). To provide scientific basis for the future prevention and treatment. Methods: A screening program of stratified randomized by clustering sampling for FGIDs was carried out among the university students in Beijing. According to the Rome III-DQ, an international method to diagnose the different kinds of FGIDs was also used. In accordance with the SF-36 life-quality system to evaluate the life quality. SPSS 15.0 was used to do the statistical analysis. Results: 1. 6926 students were involved in this investigation, the overall incidence of FGIDs is 13.32%. The incidence of main symptom of FGIDs is 408.33%, The most common disease of FGIDs is shown as functional constipation (4.18%), unspecified functional bowel disorder (3.02%), functional dyspepsia (1.59%), proctalgia fugax (0.83%), rumination syndrome (0.47%). The main symptoms are listed as constipation (74.8%), sensation of foreign body in the throat(38.03%), abdominal pain(35.53%), bloating(28.72%), nausea(25.69%), etc. The diseases overlapping rate of FGIDs is 3.28%, symptoms overlapping rate is 57.83%. 2. The incidence is different in gender, nation, and time of studying.Female are higher than male (8.89%v.s7.09%,P=0.004) , minority ethnic group is higher than the Han group (10.19%vs7.67%,P=0.03) , the 2nd and 3rd grade students are higher than the freshman and 4th grade students ( 8.20%, 9.07%vs6.94%, 6.35%). 3. The possible risk factors of FGIDs include: bad eating habits, bad living and studying habits, studying and life style and past stressing history. 13 kinds of related factors of eating habit(over -eating, choosy in foods, eating raw foods, cold foods, hotter foods, spicy foods, dry and hard foods, dairy foods, the the amount of vegetables and fruits, dietetic restraint foods, loosing weight, alcohol driking) are significantly different between the FGIDs patients and non-symptom populations(P=0.000); there is also existed obvious different between the two group about the recreation, entertainment, sleeping time, studying overnight, feel more intensity and pressure about studying, exercise rate, resting rate in weekend and smoking, etc( P=0.03-0.000 ). Obvious different is also existed in these two groups about the history of supersensitivity, frequent drug taking, injury history, gut infection history. Analysis of Logistic regression show, there is positive relation between the incidence of FGIDs with the over-eating, choosy in foods, loosing weight, dietetic restraint foods, less time consuming in sports, smoking, gastroenteritis etc, a negative relation with the frequent eating of raw foods, the amount of fruits consuming, recreation, TV watching time, sleeping time. 4. Compare with the non-symptom population, FGIDs patients' quality of life were all declined obviously. Conclusion: By using the Rome III diagnostic questionnaire, the overall incidence of FGIDs is about 13.32% among the university students in Beijing, the diseases overlapping rate of FGIDs is 3.28%; the incidence of 18 kinds of main symptoms of FGIDs is 408.33%, symptoms overlapping rate is 57.83%. Gender, different grade, the bad eating habits, life and studying style and many kinds of stressing history have a close relation with the incidence, obvious decline in the health related quality of life.
