The ocean flows with abundant resources of marine drug organisms. In the continuation of our research for finding bioactive compounds and new compounds from marine organisms, The chemical constituents of Codium fragile (Sur.) Hario and the antiviral activities of sulphated polysaccharides of seven kinds of algae collected from the South China Sea against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and coxsackie B3 virus (CoxB3) in vitro were studied. The bioactivity of polysaccharides of seven kinds of algae collected from the same sea area were analyzed and compared for the first time.Two chemical compounds have been isolated and the structures were confirmed to be as: Hexadecanoic acid and (24S)-24-ethylcholesta-5,25-dien-3-ol(clerosterol); The mixture of phytol and the mixture of clerosterol and codisterol were determined by the method of GC-MS. (24S)-24-ethylcholesta-5,25-dien-3-ol(clerosterol) is the major sterol in the alga of Codium fragile (Sur.) Hario, and the minor is codisterol.Seven kinds of algae we have investigated included Laminaria japonica Aresch, Sargassum henslowianum C. Agardh, Ulva pertusa Kjellman, Codium fragile (Sur.) Hario , Gelidium divaricatum Martens , Gracilaria lemaneiformis (Bory) W.v.B and Grateloupia filicina (L.) C.Ag. Fatty acids in these algae were determined by GC-MS. Saturated fatty acid (SAFA) in seven kinds of algae all cover 40% of total fatty acids and the main fatty acid is hexadecanoic acid. The polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in Codium fragile, Ulva pertusa, Gracilaria lemaneiformis and Sargassum henslowianum are higher with relative contents of 26.32%, 8.56%, 4.31% and 2.08 % respectively. Fifteen elements in seven kinds of algae were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The contents of Ca, Mg, P are higher than other elements and the contents of Fe, Mn, Sr, Zn are higher than other trace elements. The experiments show that the algae collected from the South China Sea are worth of exploring in the aspect of Ocean Function Food.The antiviral activities of polysaccharides from seven kinds of algae against HSV-1 and CoxB3 in vitro were researched.
