Objective To observe the dental pulpal response and its biological effect to cavity preparation in rabbit incisors in a short term by the Er:YAG laser. Methods A total of forty incisors of ten healthy rabbits were divided into two equal groups: Er:YAG laser and conventional bur group.FolIowing the EnYAG laser and the conventional bur cavities preparation in rabbit incisors ,the cavities were filled as normal way . The teeth were extracted immediatelly and after 72 hours post-operation respectively. The dental pulp tissue in the EnYAG lase group and the conventional bur group was examined histologically and immunohistologically for TGF-β1 by immunohistochemistry S-P method. Results1. The histologic examination showed that there was no appreciable difference in the manner in which dental pulp tissue responded to cavity preparation with either laser or a conventional bur.2. Compared with the conventional group, the expression of TGF-β1 in dental pulp tissue was more pronounced in the EnYAG laser group.Conclusion1. Histologic evaluation revealed that EnYAG laser causes no noticeable pulpal damage to the dental pulp tissue using for cavity preparation and appears to be a safe method for removing dental hard tissue.
