Low back pain (LBP) is a common complaint among tank soldiers in armored division. Compared with civilian jobs, many tasks in tank soldiers' drill are functioned with above-average level of physical strength, psychological overload and hard environmental condition, which all are belived to be possibly high risk factors associated with LBP. Aiming to go deeply into the LBP in tank soldiers under special condition, we decided the active-duty tank soldiers of an armored division based in northwestern cold highland as study objects and performed our systematically clinical research since January of 2005. The whole research included four relatively independent parts as follows.Part I: LBP in an armored division based cold highland: results of acomparative prevalence study Objectives To survey LBP in the armored division based in northwesterncold highland, the epidemic characters of and relative factors to the tank soldiers' LBP were especially analyzed. Methods Firstly, a cross-sectional study was performed, in which 1367 tank soldiers as study group and 1089 non-tank soldiers as reference group were investigated by a kind of self-designed questionnaire. Secondly, more data from the objects reported suffering from LBP in their questionnaires was gained by standardized physical examination, radiographic analysis of lumbar spine, and standardized back disability questionnaires. Finally, the data was analyzed by comparison between the study group and the reference group. Results The prevalence rate of LBP was 31.5% in the whole sample. That was 41.3% in the study group, and significantly higher than 19.2% in the reference group (P<0.01). The prevalence rates of different types of LBP and the prevalence...
