Objective: The gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma is a common malignant tumor growing in digestive tract, most of patients are advanced gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma, which is the main reason for the deaths of cancer. It has been reached the consensus that adjuvant chemotherapy must be applied after operation for the patiens with advanced gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma. The therapeutic effect in the near future is well, but not fine in the long-term. Most of patients died of relapse or metastasis in few years. So the problem is suggested to be considered during making treatment plan. It is accredited for tumor markers as parameters to judge the effect of chemotherapy. It has already been reported that the decreasing of tumor markers level after application of chemotherapy implied effective, on the other hand, ineffective if them were stable or increasing. But the tumor markers changing from negative to positive after application of chemotherapy means why. There hasn't been reported at present. So we try to investigate the correlation of chemotherapy and the drift of tumor markers and the clinical significance. Methods: Serum samples were obtained from 250 the patients who had received radical operation of gastric cancer or colorectal cancer, and had been diagnosed as adenocarcinoma by pathology, and there were of no tumor in the body before application of chemotherapy. Before the application of chemotherapy and 2 weeks after the application of chemotherapy, serum CEA, CA19-9 and CA242 of the patients were tested, and dividied into CEA (-) to (-) group and CEA from (+) to (-) group, and counted the positive drift rate of the tumor markers of CA19-9 and CA242 in every group. Statistical analysis was used upon all data. Results:â‘ In CEA (-) to (-) group, the positive drift rates of CA19-9 in gastric and colorectal carcinoma were 26.6% and 8.6% respectively, those of CA242 were 22.8% and 10.9% respectively. There were of significant difference between gastric carcinoma and colorectal carcinoma.â‘¡In CEA from (+) to (-) group, the positive drift rates of CA19-9 in gastric and colorectal carcinoma were 15.4% and 6.7% respectively, CA242 15.4% and3.3% respectively. There were of no significant difference between gastric carcinoma and colorectal carcinoma.â‘¢In the two groups, there were of no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: The positive drift of the markers signifies that the drug-resistant cell strains grow up gradually. For the reason, it is suggested to consider the drift as guiding the application of chemotherapy.
