| Objective: To evaluates the effectiveness of Chinese herbs therapy (harmonizing spleen and stomach) on malnutrition of gerontal patients with maintaining hemodialysis objectively through observing the changes of some indices before and after treatment. The indices include: Dry weight, Triceps skinfold th ickness (TSH), Mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC), albumin (ALB), Transferrin (TF), Haematoglobin (HGB), Cholesterol (CT) and Proteinum catabolice rate (PCR). To provides theoretical foundation for the administration of this therapy on malnutrition of gerontal patients with maintaining hemodialysis. Methods: All the 40 gerontal patients with chronic renal failure came from the Hemodialysis Centre of NO.1 Affiliated Hospital of GuangZhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and all of them received basic treatment according to the hemodialysis -related factors. 20 patients of them(Group 1) were randomly assigned to receive additional Chinese herbal therapy according to their syndrome differentiation: patients who were differentiated as asthenic spleen and stomach were given modified LiuJunZi Decoction and patients who were differentiated as hygric pathogen blocking middle energizer were given modified WenDan Decoction. Another 20 patients who received only the basic hemodialysis treatment composed the control group (Group 2). Comparability of the two groups had been ensured. The courses of treatment were 3 month. Of both the groups, nutrition-related indices, including Dry weight, TSH, MAMC, ALB, TF, HGB, CT and PCR were observed regularly (2 weeks, 1 month, 3 month after the initiating of treatment). GNA score was applied to evaluating the changes of every patient. The major syndromes and physical signs were also been observed. As to Group 1 and Group 2, changes of symptoms, physical signs, and nutrition-related indices were compared; As to the patients, own control of all the above-mentioned items had been undertaken. Student's t-test was... |
