OBJECTIVE:The abnormal proliferation of glomerular mesangial cells(GMC) is the common pathologic character of many glomerular diseases. The proliferation of GMC can induce extracellular matrix(ECM) expansion, which can lead to glomerulosclerosis(GS),renal fibrosis and even end stage renal failure in the final.Measures which try to control the proliferations of GMC are very important to retard the development of glomerular damages and prevent the development of chronic renal disease. Artemisinin is a kind of drugs which has many pharmacological effecs. Present studies have proved that artemisinin can inhibit abnormal proliferation and promote apoptosis of tumor cells. It also can prevent fibrosis process of scar and hepatic fibrosis tissue, In this subject, effects of artesunate(Art) on the proliferation of rat GMC induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were studied.
