Objective: By comparing with the occurring of carotid artery atherosclerosis and plaque between the patients with morning hypertension and those with non-morning hypertension to explore the occurrence, features of carotid artery atherosclerosis in patients with morning hypertension, and to analyze the effect of morning blood pressure on the occurrence and development of artery atherosclerosis. So as to provide the theory to make the blood pressure well control, and prevent the cardiovascular events and the general way to cure the vascular diseases. Methods: Sixty-seven subjects with the first and second stage of essential hypertension were selected in out-patient department, 45 male and 22 female, and the average age is 70.43±7.47. All these diseases should be excepted: secondary hypertension, heart dysfunction, cardiomyopathy renal disease, stroke and the patients who sleep on daytime, and work in night time. Noninvasive ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM) was performed on the patients and according the ABPM result the patients were classified into MP+ group and MP-group. In the meantime, the patients were examined by color Doppler scans ultrasonics which was operated by specially assigned person to measure the mean blood velocity (Vm), blood pulse index (PI) and blood resistant index (RI) of common carotid artery (CCA) and internal carotid artery(ICA) to investigate the changes of carotid artery hemodynamics. To quantify the extent of CAS, the intima-media thickness (IMT) of CCA and ICA were measured, the maximal thickness measurements of all plaques were summed for an individual plaque score. Record the data mentioned above and manage statistic analysis with SPSS 11.5.Result: (1) Vm, PI, RI of CCA and ICA differed significantly between Group EH(Group MP+ and Group MP-) and Group NS(P<0.05).There was also a significant difference between Group MP+ and Group MP- (P<0.05).The hemodynamic changes in carotid arteries in patients with EH included decreased Vm and increased PI, RI.
