Objective:The aim of this study was to investigate the association of metabolic syndrome and intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid artery in Han, Uighur, and Kazakh population of Xinjiang. Methods:1)This cross-section study was performed in 15061 people aged 35 and over years old at Xin jiang by using a four-stage selected random sampling method, and 14618people accepted in facts. All the subjects was divided into two groups, the metabolic syndrome group (MSgroup) and the non-metabolic syndrome group (non-MSgroup); 2)A11 the patients underwent recoding of smoking, systolic blood Pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), The intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid arteries were measured by non-invasive method; 3)SPSS 11.0 software package was used for the analysis. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in different nations was analyzed. The association of metabolic syndrome and intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid artery were analyzed. Results:1)To the whole subjects, the IMT of MS group was higher (0.08±0.03cm versus 0.07±0.03cm, P<0.05) than the non-MS group; 2)The IMT of MS groups in Han, Uighur, and Kazakh people was higher. Results did show statistical difference between the two group (t=-5.80, P<0.001;t=-6. 877, P<0.001; t=-2.805, P=0.005); 3)After correcting the factors of age and sex, results did show statistical difference between the two group in han and Uighur (P<0.05). But there is no statistical difference in Kazakh (p=0.371). Conclusion:The results of this study showed that Metabolic syndrome raises the risk of atherosclerosis in Han, and Uighur population of Xinjiang. But it has no conspicuous effect in Kazakh population. The sonography of carotid artery as early as possible is helpful for primary prevention of cardiovascular events in the patients of metabolic syndrome.
