BACKGROUNDFood industry has gained much development in China, but the food safety seems to become more and more serious and the events of food poison appears to be more common than before. So the Ministry of Health had issued a policy to popularize "grading management of food hygiene" in April 2002, which aimed to control and minimize the incidence of food-related diseases and food poison, and to assure the people's health and to promote economic development and to stabilize society through reinforcing the management and supervision of food hygiene.OBJECTIVESTo understand the hygienic status of catering industry at city level in Luoyang, and then to analyze the rating score based on grading management policy and to evaluate effectiveness in the process of implementation, and then to explore the limitations and finally to put forward relevant strategies for better implementation of the grading management to improve quality of caterings.METHODOLOGYAll the 83 catering units, including restaurants from hotels and dinning room from schools, were surveyed by the investigators. The data included the process of implementing grading management and the current status of catering units.
