| [ Objective] The purpose of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of depression among middle school students, and its differences in grade, age and gender, also to explores the relations among middle school students' depressive mood with school factors, family environment, loneliness and interpersonal trust. In practice, the findings of the study contribute to mental health education, prevent, treatment and intervention of adolescent depression, and quality education of middle school students.[Method] A total of 879 middle school students of Jinan and Tangshan urban area were randomly selected and measured with Zung Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS), Family Environment Scale (FES-CV), Loneliness Scale (UCLA), Interpersonal Trust Scale(ITS) and self-rated questionnaire.[ Results ] Of all the respondents, the prevalence rate of depressive symptoms was 43.5%, mild, moderate and severe depression were 30.8%, 10.4% and 2.3%, respectively. Females reported more frequent mild and moderate depression compared to males. Depression symptoms were found to differ by age and grade.The mean score of SDS was 39.6 ± 7.0. The mean scores of female(40.1±7.0) were higher than male subjects ( 39.0±7.1) (P< 0.05).8th-grade was a critical developmental phase for depression.
