Profound changes have taken place in China's national economic structure and the self-governed national economic system came into being after the establishment of the People's Republic of China since 1949. It has achieved a new prosperous progress in culture, education and public health without parallel in history. The foundation of the country's medical education was very unsubstantial because the new socialistic China was established based on the poor and backward old China. The Kuomintang's government had run some medical schools, but most of them had feeble teaching staffs, dated teaching equipments with very small scale and unreasonable distributed locations. Therefore, the main way to solve these problems is to develop the medical education career rapidly.From 1949 up to the present, China's higher medical education career has experienced a flexuous developing way. But China's medical education has achieved great progress and notable success through the teaching staff's hard work. Reviewing and summarizing the china's history of medical education in general, we can divide this period into three phases: from 1949 to 1966, it was the establishment phase of our higher medical education system. In this phase, our country formed elementary system of china's higher medical education in light of experiences of Russia; from 1966 to 1976, it was the disordered phase. In this phase, all schools'order had been thrown into confusion. So it formed a low-origination and low quality three years'technological academy system; from 1976 up to the present, with the reform of china's economic system and progress of the modern society, the reform of china's higher medical education has come into a new development phase and has formed a multilevel, multi-specialty and multiform higher medical education system step by step.This research focused on the reform of china's higher medical education from 1976, using method of combination of document research and investigation, combination historical approach with reality and theoretical investigation, macroexamination and microexamination. We divide this period into five phases according to the time order and the important reform measure in that time.
