With the medical technology continuously developing, more and more medical images are used in the clinical diagnosis. The concept of the PACS was proposed in 1980s, and this system is mainly used to gain, display, archive, transmit and manage medical images. After studied and promoted for so many years, the system is under a good development. However, the development of the PACS is restricted by some technologies, such as the compression technique of the medical images. Although recently the JPEG compression standard used in the PACS system can basically satisfy the requirement, it still has many limitations as block distortion would appear in the case of low bit-rate of images and the function is too unitary. xThe JPEG2000 standard was promoted in 2000 by ISO and ITU, it uses the wavelet transformation and the EBCOT algorithm. It can overcome the block distortion brought by DCT algorithm of JPEG standard, and also supports many new functions such as the super compression performance under low bit-rate, lossy and lossless coding in a single stream, progressive transmission, error resilience, region of interest coding and so on.In this paper, some basic theories of the compression technology were firstly introduced, then the basic structure and kernel algorithm of JPEG2000 were explained in detail. Finally, the algorithm experiment platform was set up by C language, and the standard images and the medical MRI images were analyzed by using this experiment platform. The result of the experiment shows that the JPEG2000 standard not only surpasses the existing JPEG standard in compression rate, but also has prominent compression effect under the low bit-rate, particularly the progressive transmission and ROI coding supported by JPEG2000 standard have great value in medical image compression and remote medical treatment, which validates that it has possibilities and advantages to adopt JPEG2000 in the PACS.
