Objective: To estimate the level of science and research work of Xinjiang Medical University from academic articles and compare it with other universities which are closing to our university by analysing the quantity and quality of academic theses of Xinjiang Medical University during 1994~2004. Methods: Bibliometric and statistics are employed for evaluation. Results: In recent years the academic thesis of Xinjiang Medical University has been increased rapidly including articles and periodicals. There is a tendency which multisubjects have cooperated each other. But there is a gap between medical universities that are close to our university in the southwest, east, central, and southern part and Xinjiang Medical University. That scientific research fund being little is an important factor for the lower quantity in scientific output. From SCI, the rate of fund, IF, coauthor and citation etc., the papers of quality of Xinjiang Medical University have improved gradually since 1998. The national fund is the major ones in the excellent articles. Some articles of basic medicine, preventive medicine, pharmacology and clinical medicine have showed good quality. Major theses assimilate exterior information to enhance their quality. The rate of cited papers of academic papers of our university is equivalency to universities that are closing to our university in the southwest, east, central, and southern part (P> 0.05). Conclusion: The quantity and quality in scientific articles of Xinjiang Medical University have been improved progressively, but we still strive to boost the quantity and quality of academic theses.
