Objective To investigate the early diagnosis, the treatment , and the clinicopathologic factors related with early recurrence after curative resection for gastric cancer. Methods The clinicopathologic factors and follow up data of 106 patients, who were admitted to our hospital from Dec 1997 to Dec 2004 with rectal cancer after curative resection, were retrospectively analyzed by logistic regression analysis. Kaplan-Meier was used to depict the survival curves and compare the differences among the cumulative survival rates according to different treatments. Results The mean time to recurrence was 18.3 month and 81.1% of postoperative recurrence was found within 2 years. Multivariate analysis showed that the serosal invasion and the number of positive lymph nodes independently influenced the recurrent time(P<0.05). Radical resection, palliative resection and bypass groups were carried out in 17 patients, 19 patients and 21 patients, for which the median survival time was ≧24.0, 9.0, and 3.0 months, respectively. The difference among them was significant (P<0.05). Themedian survival time was 2 months for the 49 patients who received nonoperative therapy, significantly lower than that of the operative groups. (P <0.05 ). Conclusions The serosal invasion and the number of positive lymph nodes are the most important factors predicting the timing of recurrence after curative resection for gastric cancer. Early diagnosis and active treatment can prolong the patient's survival time.
