Objective. This study was designed to compare three kinds of congenital cysts of the floor of the mouth in 89 Chinese patients, who were treated in Stomatological hospital of Wuhan University, and in 120 foreign patients, who were treated in Jordanian hospitals from 1980 to 2005.Methods. Patients with dermoid cysts, epidermoid cysts and teratoid cysts were further analyzed with regard to age, sex, race, anatomical distribution, size of the cyst, hospitalizing period, duration of the cyst, methods of surgical treatment and recurrences.Results. Our investigations showed that the females were more significantly common to have these cysts than males, and the greatest frequency within the third decade, except in teratoid cysts which was of the highest occurrence in the first decade. It was found that the congenital cysts were most commonly diagnosed in the midline. All cases were treated by cystectomy, but the most common way was the external approaches in the first group, whenever the intraoral was most used in the second group. The recurrence rate was 19.14%, namely, all together 40 patients in both groups as a whole.Conclusions. In the authors' experience, the intraoral approach was also effective for the treatment of large lesions and led to very good cosmetic and functional results, whereas the extraoral incision was necessary only when the cysts were under the mylohyoid muscle.
