Objective To investigate the prevention and treatment of complications and multiple factors which may affect complications in thyroid arterial embolization to treat hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease. Materials and Methods 1. Thirty-seven patients of hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease had been treated through transcatheter arterial embolization, observed in operation and after operation, and followed up mid-or long-term. 2. The complications in operation and after operation of the 37 patients had been investigated; methods of prevention and treatment of completions had been summarized. 3. Multiple factors which would affected complications had been analyzed such as the patients' serum thyroid hormone level before embolization, the serum TSAb level before embolization, whether or not embolized both thyroid inferior artery and the number embolizaed arteries. Results Two cases were dystopic cerebral embolism, which one case' paralysis caused by brain infarction was recover after treated to symptoms actively, one case was death because of thyroid storm a which induced by cerebral infarction although treated actively; two cases were thyroid storm, one of which was the die patient who induced by cerebral infarction and one was induced by hypoparathyroidism and recoveredafter treatment; two cases were hypoparathyroidism; two cases were periodic paralysis; two cases were hypothyroidism; a number of cases were other complications. Conclusion (1) Dystopic cerebral infarction is the most severe and danger complication. It systematically studies and researches the cause of dystopic cerebral infarction from various kinds point of view and formulates a rigorous measure which can prevent dystopic cerebral infarction. (2) The serum thyroid hormone level before embolization has positive correlation to complications. It has more complications when thyroid hormone level and the serum TSAb is very heighten before operation, but it is not the absolute contradication to interventional therapy that when thyroid hormone level is very heighten before operation. (3) Hypoparathyroidism can be greatly decreased if don't embolize both thyroid inferior artery in onetime operation, it proves that thyroid artery embolization don't occur permanent hypoparathyroidism. (4) Hypothyroidism may occur if embolize four or half and three arteries at the same time, it must further observe. (5) It has not different in complications between embolize two arteries and three or half and three arteries. Arterial embolization treatment is curative safe simple little pain method. It provides an alternative method for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in clinical practice, which should be further studied.
