Study background and objective : Identification using radiographic image materials is one of the important study directions of forensic radiology. The special morphologic characteristics of frontal sinus make it be the most used recognition marks in the cranial marks. Frontal sinus is inter-special, lifetime invariable, difficult to forge, easy to obverse and measure, so can be as recognition marks. There were many studies and case reports concerning identification using radiographic image materials of frontal sinus in foreign forensic medicine. And those studies most shot radiographic films in some standard postures. Using computer radiographic films, this study approach recognition marks of frontal sinus in different locative postures so as to propose simple and practical identification code of frontal sinus. Meanwhile, we compare the difference of these marks between both sexes to see weather there is statistic significance of them, and study thefrontal sinus morphologic characteristics of Han population in Sichuan province.[ Method ] Collect frontal sinus computer radiographic films according including criterion. Using descriptive epidemiology to describe and analyse statistically the frontal sinus characteristics, i. e. the ratios of various width and morphologic characteristics.[ Results ] (1) Adopt 8 recognition marks of frontal sinus to formulate 8-digital frontal sinus identification code, i. e. the bilateral asymmetry, ratio of width of frontal sinus and fossa orbitalis, the superiority side, the number of arches of the left and right upper border of frontal sinus, the number of left and right partial septa and the location of central septa. (2)The difference between both sexes of frontal sinus morphologic characteristics has no statistic significance (P >0.05). (3) The relative frequency of the bilateral and unilateral absence of sinus of Han population in Sichuan province are 8. 70% and 16.96%, respectively.[Conclusion ] (1)Frontal sinus is inter-special and can be used to forensic identification. (2)The difference between both sexes is not significance and can not be used to determine sex. (3) The relative frequency of the bilateral and unilateral absence of sinus of Han population in Sichuan province are 8. 70% and 16. 9 6%, respectively.
