According to theories of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and combined with the modern medical investigation method, a clinical study was carried out to observe the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion treating simple obesity.60 subjects suffered from simple obesity were divided randomly into two groups: acupuncture treatment group and control group. There were no obvious difference (p>0.05) in sex, course of disease, obesity degree and differentiation of TCM between the two groups. According to the principle of syndrome differentiation the acupuncture treatment group was carried out with the complex treatment of acupuncture plus alimentary control. In this group different types was treated with different points: stomach intestine type with Stagnum Curvum (Dill), tomachmeridian(S51), stomach meridian(s36), stomach meridian(s44) and so on. Deficiency of spleen and stomach type with spleen meridian (sp6),Gall-bladder meridian(G34) concep. conception vessal meridian(Cv6), stomach meridian(s36) and so on ; shortage of kidney energy with conception vessel meridian(cv12), conception vessel meridian(cv4). Triple Energizer meridian(TEG), mare illuminationis (Ni6) and so on. After needling sensation the needle was reserved for 30 minutes and was made transmission every 10 minutes during the period。 Acupuncture was carried out everyday on the first week and three times a week after. The total course of a treatment cycle was 3 weeks. And there were two cycles in total. Thecontrol group was treated with simple alimentary therapeutics: according to the patient' s ideal weight and the level of his activity, the ideal total amount of energy per day was calculated. The final total amount of energy per day of the mild obesity patient was less 200Kcal than the ideal amount of energy, and that of the more obesity was less 600Kcal. Nothing else was carried out besides the intake of saccharide, fat and whoopee water being strictly controlled. Body mass, Waistline, Hip circumference, HDL-C, TG, CHOL, INS were measured and BMI, WHR and ISI were calculated before and after treatment. It was showed that after 6 weeks the total effective rate of acupuncture treatment group was 93. 3% and 80. 0% of the control group. The therapeutic effect of the former was obviously prior to that of the latter (P<0. 01). There was no significant difference to the therapeutic effects of the complex treatment of acupuncture plus alimentary control between the three traditional Chinese medical types of simple obesity (p>0. 05). Body mass, waistline, abdomen circumference and hip circumference could be improved by both of the two therapies, while the acupuncture treatment group was superior to the control group(P<0. 05). TG, CHOL and INS were also improved and there was significant difference between the two groups (p<0. 05). Conclusion: the clinical investigation manifested that the acupuncture treatment group was superior to the control group in lowering body mass, ameliorating objective signs and improving related experimental indexes, which suggested that the therapeutic effect of the complex treatment of acupuncture plus alimentary control was obviously superior to that of the simple alimentary therapeutics while there was no significant difference to the therapeutic effects of the complex treatment of acupuncture plus alimentary control between the three types of simple obesity.By observing the therapeutic effects of the complex treatment of acupuncture plus alimentary control and simple alimentary therapeutics, the mechanisms of weight reduction by acupuncture and moxibustion was investigated to support reliable scientific instruction to current weight reducing beautification clinically and socially as well as attractive social and economic benefit.
