Objective To dectect the possible association between interleukin-4 receptor gene polymorphism and allergic rhinitis. Methods The study was conducted in two different groups: patients with allergic rhinitis (the case group, n=35) and healthy people (the control group, n=30). The IL-4R Q576R polymorphism was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The study compared frequencies distribution of genotype and allele between the two groups, and calculated odds ratio (OR) of genotype. Results Frequencies of QQ QR and RR genotypes were 60% 34% and 6% in the case group, and 90% 10% and 0% in the control group respectively. The significant difference was found in the frequency distribution of IL-4R genotype between the two groups (Fisher P<0.0118). Moreover IL-4R allelic frequencies also showed significant difference between the two groups (x 2=8. 26, P<0. 01). The R576 allelic frequency in the case group was more common than in the control group. Relative risk of suffering allergic rhinitis among those with mutant allele R576 was 5. 63 times in comparison with those with wild allele Q576. Conclusion IL-4R gene polymorphism was associated with allergic rhinitis. The study showed the possibility that Q576R polymorphism might be important in determining an individualrhinitis and the mutant R576 allele might be one of the candidate genes for susceptibility to allergic rhinitis.
